The film follows a cat-and-mouse game between two good friends: one a cop, and the other a "setter" who arranges brilliant students in place of weak students to appear in examinations.。清朝两位书生陈月升、李强偶遇很多不平常的事，人力自然无法解释的。一晚他们又遇到一位自称来自一千多年前的金朝的慧能禅师，要他们追查天地间出现的异象，天地间将有妖孽出现，可能来自七重天外，而他们能遇到种种反常现象，显然与此有缘，天意难违，天将降大任于斯。。
